Cherry Grove Archives Collection

For decades people from all walks of life have visited the beaches, rented cottages and owned property in Cherry Grove, each of them taking a piece of the island with them through their memories and stories.

With social media, society has a new way to "come together" and share our collective experiences from all generations. Through online outlets we are able to stay connected, even when we may be far apart.

Our Facebook page is a great way to share images from the archive and engage our community members in helping us document the life of our special sanctuary.

Each week the Cherry Grove Archives Collection posts on Facebook one of our community's historical photographs, selected from the many thousands of images stored in our Archives.

By uncovering the past, we hope to reveal the richness of Cherry Grove's history and the importance within that history of its LGBTQ(S) community, both on Fire Island and within the LGBTQ movement. We aim to celebrate the Grove's theatrical performances and the creativity of community traditions, each summer's excitement and joy, and the everyday life that has defined Cherry Grove since the early 1900's.

As an Archives Committee volunteer, photographer and educator Susan Kravitz spends great amounts of time restoring the photos posted on Facebook each week. Cleaning up aged images while maintaining the integrity of the original photographs takes a skilled hand, and hours of work goes into restoration before posting.
